The day trips from San Francisco to beautiful Muir Woods and Sausalito are ideal if you’re visiting the Bay Area and you’re looking for a one-day getaway. Your adventure begins with a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge on the way out of San Francisco and from there, you’ll wind your way through the beautiful coastal mountains to Muir Woods.
The Muir Woods National Monument has been preserved for decades as a redwood sanctuary, and some of the country’s oldest and most beautiful trees can be found here. A total of 554 acres fall within the park’s protection boundaries, with about 240 of those acres safeguarding old coastal redwood trees. This unique ecosystem is often covered in a thin layer of marine fog, which delivers constant moisture and stimulates the growth of the stunning plant and animal life found inside the forest. Bring your camera! These once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities are not to be missed.
From Muir Woods National Monument, you will continue on to Sausalito, which is considered by many to be the prettiest city in California. After becoming a ship-building hotbed during the World War II era, Sausalito morphed into a popular base for local artists and began to attract wealthy vacationers and well-to-do residents. Today, it borders a wide expanse of open spaces that are protected as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Sausalito is famous for the Mediterranean-style coastal houses dotting its stunning shoreline and the luxury houseboats bobbing in the water along its pier. You’ll enjoy spectacular views of the village’s beautiful bay and they’ll pause to give you plenty of time to explore at your leisure. Visit the local boutiques, have a cup of tea, or go off in search of unique photo opportunities. You’ll find plenty of striking views!
