Day 1: San Francisco to Monterey - 154 miles
Pick up from hotels in downtown San Francisco area start at 8:15 AM. The tour departs by 9:00 AM. Driving along San Andreas Fault, the bus turns west to Half Moon Bay and then south on the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Cruz with beautiful views of the ocean. You reach Monterey by mid day, after a short tour stop at the Cannery Row, allowing time for lunch or an optional visit to the Aquarium. From the seaside gardens of Pacific Grove to 17 Mile Drive, you see the ocean crashing, mansions, and golf courses. A stop is included at Pebble Beach. The bus then continues to Carmel by the Sea, the idyllic village with its art galleries and cottages set in pine trees. During the trip, stops are made at Pacific Grove, 17 Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, and Carmel by the Sea for about an hour. You arrive at the Bay Park Hotel by 5:30 PM.

Day 2: Monterey to Salinas and Los Angeles - 375 miles.
Carmel beach After a relaxing morning at the hotel, at 10:15 AM Sal's taxi (prepaid) transfers you to Salinas Train Station. This takes about 30 minutes. The Amtrak train takes us through the Salinas Valley, center of Monterey Country's agricultural region. The route takes us by Salinas River, through small towns and fields of lettuce, broccoli, and acres of green houses. Suddenly by King City, we see miles and miles of newly planted vineyards, where just a few years ago there was only cattle pasture. The oil fields appear and then the military installations at Camp Roberts. Soon we reach historic Paso Robles. Leaving the level areas, we now climb Cuesta Grade and drop down to sea level at San Luis Obispo. The ocean briefly appears at Pismo Beach. Heading south, the rails go by Vandenberg Space station. Near Goleta, you see some of the most scenic ocean views all the way through Santa Barbara to Oxnard. Turning inland around 6:00 PM, the train goes past miles of orange groves, then through Fillmore and Simi Valley to Glendale. At about 9:00 PM, we arrive in the heart of Los Angeles, Union Station. Taxicabs to downtown locations cost about $20 and twice as much to Hollywood, West Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills. If you would like to go farther south, the Surfliner reaches Anaheim at 10:51 PM, San Juan Capistrano at 11:25 PM, and San Diego after midnight at 12:50 AM.
